Whitchurch & Ganarew Local History Society Library
Since its inception in 2015, members of the Society have been researching the history of the local area, local ‘characters’, origin of buildings, place names and so on. Many different people have contributed material on aspects of local history that have particularly interested them and ‘older’ residents have been interviewed to ensure that their memories of life in the area are not forgotten.
Additionally, much research was done for our WW1 exhibition to mark 100 years since the end of ‘The Great War for Civilisation’. This was held in November 2018.
Having amassed this information, the Society decided that we should start a small library to house it and thus a cabinet was donated and restored. It is now positioned in the foyer of the Memorial Hall in Whitchurch.
Since then, more material has been donated, such as work done to satisfy the grant for the restoration of the Clock Tower in 2010 which also showed the history of the main buildings in the Old Monmouth Road and the families who lived in them.
More recently, many articles from the ‘Village News’ have been added from the 1980s and 1990s.
Attached is a list of all the material now held in this cabinet. If any one has any information, photograph, press cuttings etc. that they would like to add to the collection, please contact the collection co-ordinator on 01600-890105.
